What does it take to best prepare students to think independently and internalize best business practices? How do educators make a lasting positive impression on their students in the classroom and outside of it—often connecting them with ideas and people capable of directing their early professional lives?
“Favorite Business Professors Of The Class Of 2025,” an article by business education website Poets&Quants for Undergrads, highlights some of the standout faculty from across U.S. universities who have made a difference to this year’s graduates. McIntire Professor Katie McDermott was named to the list by recent Commerce School graduate Josh Novick (McIntire ’25).
Novick, who was himself named to Poets&Quants’ Best and Brightest for 2025 by Commerce School faculty and staff, singled out McDermott for her engaging teaching style that helps students “connect with the material through pride, enthusiasm, and vitality—all at once.” Highlighting her teaching abilities; openness with students during office hours; and a commitment to students feeling “heard, respected, and valued,” Novick notes that she shares her own experiences to benefit those she teaches.
The mention in Poets&Quants is yet another honor for McDermott. Since joining the McIntire faculty’s Accounting area in 2017, she received the 17th annual Recognition Award by the Order of the Claw & Dagger in 2023 for her excellence in support of her students and dedication to McIntire.
