Catching Up in California

It’s always wonderful to connect with our extended Commerce community during regional visits, and this California trip proved to be another exceptional experience.

Throughout this calendar year, we’ve been back out on the road, giving me the chance to visit some major alumni hubs and finally—finally—introduce myself. It’s always wonderful to connect with our extended Commerce community during regional visits, and this California trip proved to be another exceptional experience. Gatherings in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Palo Alto, and San Francisco provided me with a chance to better get to know the engaged members of McIntire’s West Coast community and learn more about the innovative work that they’re spearheading across multiple industries.

Oct. 17, 2022 – Happy Hour in a Hangar at Santa Monica Airport

Happy hour in Santa Monica was a great way to kick off our week on the West Coast. Graciously hosted by Patrick Pettay (McIntire ’99), our get-together took place in Hangar 7 of Santa Monica Airport at the offices of UP.Labs, a groundbreaking venture lab focused on the future of transportation and mobility. Touring the country has allowed me to visit many innovative work spaces and the beautiful homes of our alumni, but I must admit that having an event in an airport hangar was a first—and hopefully not the last—for me!

Thanks so much to Patrick and for all of the alumni who attended.

Oct. 19, 2022 – An Illuminating Alumni Luncheon in Palo Alto

Northern California is home to a great many tech-enabled businesses, and the opportunity to meet and speak with McIntire alumni working within these industries driving innovation and disruption was nothing short of enlightening. Very special thanks to Glen Kacher (McIntire ’93) for hosting our lunch in Palo Alto.

Hearing from our talented alumni pursuing careers in leading-edge technology and venture capital was eye-opening on so many levels. Last year, 6.39% of our students accepted positions in the information technology sector, a number that will likely grow as digital transformation continues to be an increasingly important part of the McIntire curriculum and a welcome influence impacting countless areas of business and society.

Oct. 20, 2022 – A Warm Welcome: Bay Area Reception at JPMorgan Chase

Walking into a room of McIntire alumni and friends in San Francisco felt like stepping through the front door at home! My heartfelt appreciation goes to Peter Engel (McIntire ’88) and JPMorgan Chase for creating the opportunity to connect directly with members of our Bay Area Commerce community. This intimate reception allowed me to engage in meaningful conversations about McIntire’s power as a force that shapes careers—and lives. It’s the experience of sharing inspirational McIntire moments like these that is critical to the development of the School’s second century plans and aspirations.

We are grateful to JPMorgan Chase for their interest, support, and acknowledgement of the immediate value that Commerce School students provide to positively impact their business. With 41.7% of last year’s graduating class accepting positions in finance, banking, insurance, and real estate, our corporate partnerships’ recruiting efforts remain integral to our students’ early career success.

In the spring semester of 2023, we’re already planning visits to Chicago, Charlotte and Dallas. I’m looking forward to meeting more McIntire alumni and friends – keep an eye on the calendar for upcoming events
