By Ashley Morani (McIntire ’25)
As I prepare for my fourth year, I look back on the start of my third year with a new perspective. Entering McIntire as a third-year student was daunting—it’s a significant step into upperclassman status within a specialized area of study. Looking back, I realize how valuable and exciting each day truly was. With that in mind, I’d like to share five pieces of advice I wish I had known before walking into Rouss & Robertson Halls on my first day as a Commerce student.
1. Don’t just read—take notes.
From day one, you’ll be assigned readings that set the stage for class discussions and deeper explorations of key concepts. I highly recommend not just reading but actively engaging with the material. Highlight the main points, paraphrase the purpose of each reading in your own words, and review your notes before each class. I found that reviewing notes with a classmate helped solidify my understanding and prepared me to contribute meaningfully during class discussions. You’ll be well-positioned for success throughout the semester by consistently preparing before class.
2. Ask for help.
McIntire professors are not only experts in their fields but also genuinely invested in your success. They desire to support your learning as well as your professional endeavors. Whether you need guidance on a complex concept, advice on career paths, or just someone to help you navigate your academic journey, they are there to help you thrive. Their insights and encouragement can make a significant difference in your experience at McIntire, so don’t hesitate to reach out and build those connections.
3. Book study rooms early and often.
As individual and group assignments ramp up, securing a study room can be a game-changer. My ICE group found study rooms to be a highly productive space, especially between classes. Working within the Comm School also offers the flexibility to attend classes or grab something to eat as needed, without disrupting group work.
4. Challenge yourself to explore other concentrations.
Initially, I was set on specific concentrations within the Comm School, but I soon realized that exploring other interests is not only possible but encouraged. The fall ICE class exposed me to new areas that led me to pursue different concentrations in the spring. McIntire’s advising team is exceptional—they’ll help you navigate your thought process and develop an academic plan that aligns with your evolving goals.
5. Take a breath and enjoy the journey.
It’s often said, but it’s true—time flies. While academic success is important, building connections with those around you is equally valuable. Amidst all the deadlines and projects, I encourage you to take a moment to enjoy the process. Working with your ICE team and classmates can be a rewarding and fun experience. The friendships you form here will extend far beyond your time in school, so take the time to connect, savor the moments, and embrace the journey.
Best of luck as you continue on your academic path!
