What inspired you to pursue graduate study in commerce, and what are your goals for the program?

My inspiration to pursue graduate study in commerce stems from a pivotal moment during my undergraduate studies when I discovered economics alongside my chemistry major. Taking microeconomics opened my eyes to how theoretical foundations, much like those in chemistry, can be applied to understand human behavior and practical business environments. This intersection of analytical thinking and real-world application fascinated me. As a Chemistry major who initially pursued Pre-Medicine, I found myself drawn to how commerce could serve as a bridge between scientific innovation and societal benefit. My research experience reinforced my passion for being at the forefront of discovery, but I realized I wanted to contribute to how these innovations reach and benefit humanity through business applications. My goals for the program are to develop expertise in financial analysis, strategic decision-making, and business operations that will enable me to work at the intersection of science and commerce. I aim to build skills in evaluating and managing technology-based ventures, understanding market dynamics for scientific innovations, and contributing to organizations that translate cutting-edge research into practical solutions that improve lives.

What courses or topics in commerce are you most excited to explore during the program?

I’m looking forward to my track-specific courses. Frontiers in Biotechnology will provide valuable exposure to emerging technologies that are transforming the industry. I’m also eager to take the required Chemical Engineering course for my track. This will allow me to build on my undergraduate foundation while applying those technical concepts through a business lens.

What drew you to the M.S. in Commerce Program at UVA McIntire?

Having spent my undergraduate years at UVA, I’ve witnessed firsthand the caliber of education and community that the University fosters. McIntire’s reputation for academic excellence and its strong alumni network in business leadership made it a natural choice for advancing my career goals. The program’s emphasis on practical application alongside theoretical knowledge aligns perfectly with my learning style, which I developed through both Chemistry laboratory work and Economics coursework. McIntire’s case-study approach and experiential learning opportunities mirror the hands-on research experience I had during my undergraduate years. Additionally, UVA’s collaborative environment has been instrumental in my personal growth. Through my involvement in club sports and various teaching roles, I’ve experienced how UVA cultivates leadership and teamwork skills. I’m confident that McIntire’s program will continue to develop these qualities while providing the specialized business knowledge I need to achieve my career objectives.

What are you most looking forward to as you begin the M.S. in Commerce Program?

I’m excited to learn from classmates with different professional backgrounds. My science background gives me a different perspective, but I know I have a lot to learn about business fundamentals from people with more experience. The group projects and case competitions sound challenging but fun. My undergraduate experiences have shown me I work well in collaborative environments, and I’m curious to tackle business problems with a team. Honestly, I’m also looking forward to recruiting season and seeing what opportunities are out there. I have some ideas about where I want to go, but I’m open to learning about roles and industries I haven’t considered yet.

What extracurriculars, clubs, or activities are you hoping to get involved with during your time here?

I’m planning to join some intramural sports and check out the business clubs on campus. I love getting up to the mountains around here—Wintergreen is great for snowboarding during the winter months.

What’s one place in Charlottesville (or on Grounds) you’re most excited to visit or explore?

I’m excited to explore more of Charlottesville’s restaurant scene. I’ve tried quite a few places so far—some of the spots on the Corner and a few downtown—but there are still so many I want to check out.
