What inspired you to pursue graduate study in commerce, and what are your goals for the program?

I enjoyed the quantitative perspective from my background in Computer Science and Statistics, but through my internships in undergrad, I became increasingly interested in roles tied more closely to business and finance. I also wanted to work in a more collaborative environment where I could leverage my communication skills. To make that transition, I realized I needed to strengthen my business acumen and align my experience more directly with commerce, which led me to pursue a Master’s in Commerce.

What courses or topics in commerce are you most excited to explore during the program?

I’m most excited about classes in corporate valuation and investment. After graduation, I hope to pursue a career in investment banking or in a market-facing role like asset management or sales and trading on Wall Street. I believe these courses will best prepare me to compete for those opportunities. We actually started corporate valuation in week one, and I’ve already learned a lot. I’m even more excited to choose electives next semester that align with my learning goals.

What drew you to the M.S. in Commerce Program at UVA McIntire?

Two things really drew me to McIntire. First was the personal learning experience. In undergrad, most of my classes were large lectures, which sometimes made it harder to engage and learn. At the start of the M.S. in Commerce Program, we’re split into two cohorts, which makes classes feel much more personal and gives you easier access to your professor’s time and expertise. Second was the post-graduation opportunities. McIntire has an incredible alumni network across the business world, and so many alumni are willing to share their career experiences and advice. That network, combined with the strong reputation of the McIntire name, helps you stand out to employers and gives you a real advantage in the job search.

What are you most looking forward to as you begin the M.S. in Commerce Program?

I’m most excited to get to know my classmates and build a stronger foundation in finance. It’s rare to be surrounded by so many people who are equally driven toward their career goals, and in an accelerated program that’s even more true. Starting off by connecting with like-minded peers is really important to me. At the same time, I’m motivated by the challenge of mastering the material, so my goal is to take full advantage of this opportunity and learn as much as I can by graduation.

What extracurriculars, clubs, or activities are you hoping to get involved with during your time here?

I’m most excited to get involved in three activities during my time at McIntire. First is the Black Commerce Student Network, which connects Black students within the School. Second, I’d like to join an investment club, since I think the best way to gain hands-on experience outside the industry is through these clubs. And lastly, I want to start a fantasy football league for the M.S. in Commerce Program (I really think my team can win it all this year).

What’s one place in Charlottesville (or on Grounds) you’re most excited to visit or explore?

I really love food, and in my family that often means barbecue. My favorite spot in Charlottesville is Vision Barbecue, which is right between the Corner and the Downtown Mall. Their meat is by far the best in the area, especially the burnt ends, and their sandwiches are great too. If you’re more into sides, Moe’s Original BBQ is a close second—the banana pudding is excellent. Other places I’d recommend are MarieBette Café, Milk and Honey, and Guajiros.
