What did you study as an undergraduate, and what prompted you to pursue graduate study in accounting?

I majored in Business Administration as an undergraduate. Shortly after graduating from American University, I began working as a Consultant in Tokyo while also studying for the U.S. CPA exam. I believe that gaining a deep understanding of accounting can unlock numerous career opportunities and provide insights into the inner workings of businesses. In the future, I aim to leverage my bilingual proficiency in Japanese and English to offer accounting services to clients in both the U.S. and Japan.

What are your academic interests?

My primary academic interest is assurance. During my U.S. CPA exam journey, my favorite subject was auditing because it provided me with various perspectives on how auditors think and behave in their job. Currently, I am taking GCOM 7350: Advanced Auditing and Applied Data Analytics taught by Professor Backof. This course focuses on teaching students how to integrate technology, such as Alteryx, into real-life auditing practices.

What courses are you most looking forward to in the M.S. in Accounting Program?

Even though I am on the Financial Reporting and Assurance Track, I am really enjoying taking GCOM 7410: Tax Research with Professor Franks this semester. Professor Franks has extensive experience in both tax and legal fields with various firms, and we can learn so much from his experiences. This course provides me with an opportunity to learn how to conduct tax research for different audiences, and it also helps me practice business writing and communications.

What do you enjoy most about the M.S. in Accounting Program?

I enjoy the supportive environment and the people I have met in the MSA program, and I know I’ll miss them when the program ends.

What extracurricular activities are you involved with?

I am currently serving as a student ambassador at the MSA program.

What is your favorite restaurant, coffee shop, or place to visit in Charlottesville?

I enjoy grabbing lunch from Bodo’s Bagels.
