University of Virginia Men’s Tennis alumnus Brian Vahaly has been elected President and Chair of the Board of the United States Tennis Association. His two-year term begins Jan. 1.
Vahaly, a 2001 McIntire alum and three-time All-American for the Cavaliers who went on to a successful professional career, will become the youngest chair of any Grand Slam event (the U.S. Open) and the first member of the LGBTQ community to serve in the role.
The USTA is the national governing body for tennis in the U.S.
“It’s an honor to be working alongside such a talented and passionate group of individuals,” Vahaly said. “Each board member brings a unique perspective, and together, we’re a team driven by a deep commitment to the game we all love.”
Vahaly also named UVA Men’s Tennis Head Coach Andrés Pedroso as a USTA presidential appointee, serving in a board-adjacent role.
Since retiring from professional tennis, Vahaly has distinguished himself as a respected chief executive – he was the Chief Operating Officer at venture capital firms Venturehouse Group and NextGen Venture Partners – with a track record of success in operational turnarounds, driving growth and improving profitability for private equity-backed, early-stage companies in the health and wellness sector.
Vahaly and his husband, Bill Jones, are raising twin boys in Washington, DC.
