William F. O’Dell Professor Emeritus Bill Kehoe lent his voice to a panel of experts discussing “2018’s Best & Worst Places for 4th of July Celebrations” in a June 2018 article appearing on personal finance website WalletHub.
Accounting for factors such as the price of burgers, beer, and three-star hotels; weather; and public safety, Kehoe explains how revelers can save money while traveling and enjoying themselves during the holiday.
“As a broad generalization,” Kehoe says, “it is better always to make reservations for lodging and transportation sooner rather than later when planning a Fourth of July trip. Travel on off-peak days likely will be easier and less expensive than on-peak travel days immediately before, on, or after the Fourth of July.”
Kehoe also details factors worth considering when choosing a destination, such as the amount of planned, free activities scheduled in each city. He also discusses the types of metrics local governments might use to measure their return on investment (ROI) and overall success of public events like fireworks displays.
