McIntire congratulates the team of Jenna Gustafson (McIntire ’19), Charlotte Kolb (A&S ’19), Hannah Lass (McIntire ’19), Kylie Sullivan (McIntire ’19), and Yuki Yang (McIntire ’19), who won Bain & Company’s Second Annual Women’s Case Competition, which took place April 19, 2018. The winning team received guaranteed first-round interview slots for Bain’s fall recruiting cycle. The team of Peilin He (McIntire ’19), Lisa Wang (McIntire ’19), Melissa Wu (McIntire ’19), and Lucy Xiao (McIntire ’19) placed third.
Fifteen teams from across the University participated in the competition, hosted by the management consulting firm in partnership with Madison House, Virginia Consulting Group, and Smart Woman Securities.
“In my opinion, there is no better way for students to gain hands-on experience in researching, designing, and presenting coherent, data-driven, strategic recommendations than through participating in firm-sponsored case competitions,” says McIntire Professor Brendan Boler, who teaches “Consulting” to several of the McIntire winners. “Bain is one of the top consulting firms in the world, and it’s a high honor to have had two McIntire teams place in the top three this year. It’s a testament to both the talent of these young women, as well as the quality education they have received thus far at McIntire.”
Boler adds that last year’s winning team also comprised several McIntire students—most of whom met in his “Consulting” class—as well as students from the College of Arts & Sciences and Engineering: Rory Finnegan (A&S ’18), Katie Henslee (McIntire ’18), Ann Liu (Engineering ’18), Catherine Makepeace (McIntire ’18), and Maggie Zheng (McIntire ’18). “Hopefully, we have the beginnings of a long streak!” he says.
“The competition was an excellent opportunity to demonstrate the skills we have honed throughout Professor Boler’s ‘Consulting’ course,” Lass says. “It was great to be able to do so in a fun, empowering environment surrounded by such talented women in the industry.”
