McIntire Professor Dorothy Leidner has recently become the President-Elect of Association for Information Systems (AIS), a global, not-for-profit professional association for scholars, and will take office Sept. 1, 2024. Founded in 1994, the organization aims to serve society through the advancement of knowledge and the promotion of excellence in the practice and study of information systems.

For Leidner, the association represents a critical bridge between technology and academic research and acts as a vital nexus for scholars across the globe during a moment of momentous change.

“At a time when digital technologies and artificial intelligence are pervading almost every academic discipline, it is imperative for information technology scholars in business schools to maintain a strong disciplinary identity and carve their own niche within these ever-evolving technology realms. The Association for Information Systems plays a very important role in bringing together scholars teaching and researching the organizational and managerial implications of information technology, including digital technologies and artificial intelligence,” she says. “As President, it will be an honor to work with community members to increase the visibility and reputation of the outstanding research being done by information technology scholars.”

The Commerce School’s Leslie H. Goldberg Jefferson Scholars Foundation Distinguished Professor in Business Ethics, Leidner will be completing her term as the Editor-in-Chief of AIS’s top-tier Journal of the Association for Information Systems to take on a new set of responsibilities.

“Dorothy is transitioning to yet another major service role in our profession,” says her fellow McIntire Professor and Information Technology & Innovation Area Coordinator Steven L. Johnson. “With her election, for the first time in AIS history, both the incoming President-Elect and the outgoing Immediate Past President, Professor Suprateek Sarker, are from the same institution. This demonstrates just one of the many ways the IT&I Area of the UVA School of Commerce has an impressive global influence and esteem in the field of information systems. We greatly appreciate the service they both provide as global ambassadors for our area, school, and university.”

An internationally renowned, award-winning information systems expert, Leidner joined the Commerce School in January 2023, bringing more than 30 years of experience teaching and conducting leading-edge research to the School. Her work focuses on the multifaceted impact of information systems and technologies on individuals, organizations, and society and has been featured in over 60 journal publications, including MIS Quarterly; Information Systems Research; Organization Science; Journal of Management Information Systems; Decision Sciences Journal; and Journal of Strategic Information Systems, among others.
