In a recent message to the McIntire community, 2018-2019 Commerce Council president, new graduate, and Poets&Quants for Undergrads’ Best & Brightest Class of 2019 mention Anant Das sent along his gratitude for a successful and memorable school year.
Highlighting some of the dozens of opportunities that kept students highly engaged, which included wellness-, diversity-, and local business-themed events, Das also recounted the many positive changes Commerce Council was able to enact within Rouss & Robertson Halls for future students.
Some of their efforts included:
- Ordering flags to create a Hall of International Flags in Rouss & Robertson Halls to visually represent the diverse student body and many nationalities of Commerce students, as well as the School’s global mission
- Partnering with the Commerce Cohort and McIntire’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to reorganize the bookshelves in the Fourth Floor Reading Room with plans for the shelves to serve as a community bookshelf for students who cannot afford textbooks or who would like to read additional materials on business-related subjects
- A new trophy case and plaque, a gift from the Class of 2019, installed for the newly unveiled McIntire Cup trophy, engraved with the winners since the beginning of the cup’s history
- A newly updated event bulletin board in front of the second floor high tables that features a rotating interactive panel and a visualization of the McIntire Cup standings
- Working with the McIntire Help Desk to purchase laptop and cell phone chargers for students to borrow
Beyond the physical improvements already underway throughout McIntire, Das noted that the Commerce Council will continue to represent students in committees discussing a planned redesign of the Blue Ridge Courtyard.
Rounding out the Council’s achievements were initiatives to enhance Graduation Weekend, including:
- Ensuring a student voice in the graduation ceremony by hosting McIntire’s first student speaker, Winnie Tsao (McIntire ’19)
- Enjoying the Graduation Celebration at Three Notch’d Brewery, giving all Commerce graduates the opportunity to celebrate with their families, faculty, and staff
- Fundraising with the support of McIntire’s Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion to purchase graduation stoles for all graduates, as both an inclusion effort at the ceremony and as a gift for all Commerce School graduates’ hard work
