Finding the Perfect Place to Live

You may be wondering what housing options look in Charlottesville. For me, it was important to find a place close to the McIntire School of Commerce and the Corner. There is no parking available for students near McIntire, so you want to live close enough to either walk or take a short bus ride to class.

You may be wondering what housing options look in Charlottesville. For me, it was important to find a place close to the McIntire School of Commerce and the Corner. There is no parking available for students near McIntire, so you want to live close enough to either walk or take a short bus ride to class. The University Transit Service and Charlottesville Area Transit are free to students. Living near McIntire is great because it’s where all your classes and group meetings will generally take place, and it’s close to the Corner which is where students spend most of their free time. Here are some of your options based on where current students have chosen to live:

The Range

The Range is a historic area of UVA that was designed by Thomas Jefferson as part of his Academical Village. Edgar Allen Poe lived at 13 West Range in 1826 before he dropped out of school, and Woodrow Wilson lived at 31 West Range while a student at the University. For the past 50 years, the Range has provided housing for graduate students from all schools—Arts & Sciences, McIntire, Darden, Engineering, Law, Medical, and Education—and residents make up the Range Community. To apply to live on the Range, there’s an online form (Disclosure: If you live in the Range, you will use a communal bathroom that is a short walk from your room.). The total rent for the 2019-2020 academic year is $7,270 and it’s less than five minutes walking distance from McIntire.

The Flats at West VillageThe Standard, and Lark on Main are all on W. Main St, which is very close to the hospital and a 10-15 minute walk from Grounds and the Downtown Pedestrian Mall. These are the most popular housing options for grad students at McIntire. You can choose between one, two, three, and four bedroom suite-like apartments with many different layouts. Each person has their own bedroom and bathroom, sharing a common living space. Units come fully-furnished and have central AC and a washer/dryer. The complex has parking options, a huge fitness center, outside pool and spa, gaming rooms, courtyards with fire pits, study spaces, and is pet-friendly.

The GrandMarc At the Corner is another option close to the Corner and McIntire. They have one, two, and four bedroom fully-furnished apartments. Each bedroom has its own private bathroom. Units come with central AC and a washer/dryer. The complex has 24-hour emergency maintenance, a community lounge and game room, movie theater, fitness center, outdoor pool and hot tub, computer lab with printing services, and coffee station.

Jefferson Park Avenue

Some students live in houses and apartments along Jefferson Park Avenue (JPA), South of Grounds and on the UVA bus line. There are a lot of awesome houses and apartments for rent in this area, which are slightly removed from the undergraduate scene. JPA is also super close to McIntire (a 10-15 minute walk), so that’s definitely a perk.

South Range Apartments

South Range

South Range

South Range Apartments are newer apartments located conveniently at the corner where Jefferson Park Avenue meets UVA. Graduate students and young professionals live here. These apartments do not come furnished, though there are a variety of spacious one- and two-bedroom floor plans are available.

Preston Square

Preston Square is a little bit farther, but it is located steps away from a UVA/Charlottesville bus stop that can get you to and from class conveniently. They offer two and three bedroom large apartments with private bathroom with porches. It also includes a gym, tanning bed, business center, game room, and kitchen.
