Synopsis

Are we really living in a more risky world? What is the most likely future impact of such “risks” on businesses, investment strategies, and society as a whole?

The sixth annual McIntire Spring Symposium, “Living Dangerously?  Risk in the 21st Century,” was held on April 15, 2005, in the University’s Old Cabell Hall.  The event explored these topics as well as the potential for new risks, both expected and unforeseen.  The Symposium expanded on the stimulating but unresolved discussions emanating during the 2004 conference, particularly with regard to the general topic of risk in a global age.  This year’s event featured a number of renowned panel participants and speakers including Ed Breen, CEO of Tyco International, author and Harvard Professor Niall Ferguson, President and Founder of Blue Ridge Capital John Griffin (McIntire ’85), Manager of the legendary Tiger Management Julian Robertson, author and Yale Dean and Professor James Gustave Speth, Managing Director of TA Associates Richard Tadler (McIntire ’78), and Vice Chairman of JPMorgan Chase Jeffrey Walker (McIntire ’77).

After the symposium, CMIT participants reconvened for a thought-provoking session with Vint Cerf, one of the founding fathers of the Internet. Dr. Cerf presented his views on the evolution of the Internet as well as the risks, challenges, and opportunities going forward.
