Admissions Q&A: Meet Pamela Pack

Pamela Pack joined UVA McIntire's Graduate Marketing & Admissions team in March 2023. Alongside her colleague, Marcy Bernabei, she supports prospective students with their M.S. in the Management of IT admissions questions.

Hometown: Riner, VA
Role: Assistant Director of Graduate Admissions & Recruiting

What is your background?

As a University of Virginia undergraduate (A&S ’16), I found that the emphasis that UVA and Brown Residential College (Brown College) place on student self-governance had a significant effect on the direction my life would take. During my time as an undergrad, I had the opportunity to take on roles that led me to connecting with and guiding first-year and transfer students throughout their initial year in Brown College and at the University. These experiences had a profound impact on my life, as I made lasting friendships and discovered my passion for serving students. Before and after graduation I had the opportunity to gain experience in non-education roles, and in their own unique way each directed me back to higher education in pursuit of supporting students in their lifelong learning experiences.

What led you to this role?

I started my higher education career in the Virginia Tech Honors College, but always felt the desire to return to UVA and Charlottesville. From there, I joined UVA’s Corcoran Department of History, where I was able to establish relationships with graduate students as an Administrative & Graduate Coordinator, while assisting them in their pursuit to earn master’s and doctoral degrees. These two experiences provided me with a broader understanding of how I wanted to make a larger impact in the lives of students, regardless of age or stage of life. While reflecting on how to consolidate my passions into one position, and knowing I wanted to continue working in the graduate education field, I felt as though I could make a significant difference in a recruiting and admissions environment focused on professional students. Coupled with wanting to make that difference at my alma mater and in the business world, the McIntire School of Commerce, as well as its leaders and their vision for the future, was the sign I had been searching for to combine my passions, desires, and hopes for my career.

What do you enjoy about working with working professional students?

I most enjoy working with professional students, as I continually find inspiration in their commitment to learning and their desire to further develop their knowledge, skills, and expertise while balancing the many facets of life.

What is your best piece of advice for prospective students?

My best piece of advice for prospective students is to always write an optional essay if the opportunity presents itself. Use that space to tell the admissions committee not only who you are, but how you arrived at the person you are today or how far you have come personally and professionally.

What is one fun fact about you?

One fun fact about me is how much I love board games. Not just your typical games such as Monopoly or Catchphrase, which I do love, but also games such as Ticket to Ride, Potion Explosion, Dominion, The Quacks of Quedlinburg, and Coup.

What is something you are currently watching/reading/listening to?

Some of my favorite shows right now are “The Night Agent,” “Succession,” and “Abbott Elementary.” I am currently reading The Midnight Library by Matt Haig, and my next book will be Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes. As for music, I am currently listening to Kelly Clarkson’s “Meaning of Life” album, new music from the Jonas Brothers, and anything by Lizzo.

What are you looking forward to in the summer months?

This summer, I am looking forward to breaking out the charcoal grill, taking a beach trip, going to Busch Gardens, 4th of July fireworks, and warm summer nights spent with friends.
