How has the M.S. in MIT Program helped you create value in your current role or organization?

My role involves helping customers realize the value of their current products or recommending new ones to drive future business results. The MSMIT program’s focus on aligning IT with business value has improved how I present solutions and models to clients. In addition, the curriculum provided practical frameworks that have enabled me to better anticipate client needs and proactively address challenges, ultimately strengthening relationships and delivering measurable impact within my organization.

What strategies have worked best for balancing coursework with your full-time job and personal life?

I have found that implementing strict time-blocking is crucial; I dedicate specific hours each week to coursework and treat these periods as non-negotiable appointments. The MSMIT program team communicated clearly with my family regarding the program’s time requirements, ensuring transparency from the outset. Among friends and on social media, I openly express my appreciation for the program, emphasizing its importance in my life and expressing pride in my commitment to this academic journey.

How have your classmates’ experiences and backgrounds enhanced your learning?

My classmates bring diverse perspectives from industries like tech, finance, and healthcare, which makes discussions richer and more practical. Hearing how they apply concepts in their roles often sparks ideas I can use at Microsoft. It’s like having a built-in think tank that broadens my approach to problem-solving.

Which course or module has had the greatest immediate impact on your thinking or work?

The leadership and organizational behavior coursework had the biggest impact because it helped me rethink how I approach team dynamics and influence without authority. I’ve already applied frameworks from that course to improve collaboration with customers and internal teams. It has greatly improved trust and results.

What made you choose a program like this at this point in your career?

I wanted to deepen my strategic thinking and leadership skills as I progress in customer success and account management. My 20 years of IT experience in the military gave me broad expertise, but I needed to strengthen my skills in business modeling and finance. The timing felt right because I have a solid foundation in my current role and can immediately apply what I learn. Plus, UVA’s reputation and network were strong motivators for choosing this program.

What has surprised you most about the learning experience so far?

I was surprised by how collaborative and interactive the program is, even in an online or hybrid setting. The level of engagement from professors and peers makes it feel like a real community rather than just coursework. As new professors join our educational setting, I continue to be impressed by their dedication and enthusiasm in cultivating a productive learning environment.
