UVA Women’s Soccer’s Tatum Galvin (McIntire ’26) Has Grand Ambitions

Discover how this McIntire student is setting her sights on a future in finance while serving as an example to her UVA Women’s Soccer teammates.

Tatum Galvin

Hailing from Highland Park, TX, just outside of Dallas, Tatum Galvin grew up surrounded by the intense heat and competitive sports culture of the Lone Star State, where she quickly developed a passion for athletic pursuits. “I loved everything about Dallas,” she shares. “Sports in Texas are just very competitive. Even high school football was a crazy scene.”

Her early life revolved around sports and family. She describes her childhood with her older brother—an outfielder on the University of Miami baseball team—and two younger sisters as one filled with shared activities and sports enthusiasm. Her family’s decision to send her and her brother to IMG Academy in Florida marked a significant turning point. “IMG was the best place for me, and a difficult, but great decision my family,” Galvin states, reflecting on how it prepared her for college life’s academic and athletic demands.

Her transition to UVA was spurred by a combination of her love for soccer and her desire for a well-rounded education. Although she was initially committed to another university for soccer, the uncertainty brought by COVID-19 led her to rethink her choice. “I started talking to UVA coaches and realized it was the perfect mix of everything I could ask for,” Galvin recalls.

Once she came to Grounds, she saw that the leap from high school to college soccer was formidable. Galvin admits, “The hardest part for me was making that jump. I had to decide: Is this something I really want?” Her determination was fueled by inspiring lessons taken from the many books her father shared from Navy SEAL authors, which she credits with honing her mental toughness. A pivotal moment came when she decided to redshirt her second year to focus on self-improvement, returning at three separate breaks to train in Michigan with a top professional trainer.

Tatum GalvinThe effort paid off. She was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week at the start of the 2024-2025 season.

Galvin’s goals reflect her team commitment and leadership aspirations. “I want to become more of a leader on the team and inspire younger players to show them that not everybody’s path is linear,” she says. Her dedication to UVA’s Women’s Soccer is clear, as she has her sights set on the team winning an NCAA tournament championship; she’s not after personal glory, but team success.

Beyond her drive in athletics, she’s pursuing her academic ambitions with equal verve. Inspired by her entrepreneurial father, Galvin always envisioned a future in business. “My dad is a big entrepreneur,” she explains, referencing his success in the family’s commercial lighting firm, launching a charter fishing company in Florida, where her family now lives, and creating The Standard Ranch Water, a tequila company, too. “He’s my biggest inspiration in making my own path.”

At UVA, Galvin has plans to concentrate in Finance at the Comm School while pursuing a minor at the School of Data Science. Her favorite course there, Mathematics for Data Science, allowed her to combine her love for concrete, collaborative work and coding by creating a large language model based on her teacher’s example of giving elementary students practice problems in math. Partnering with another student, she says building the neural network was a full semester’s work.

“My teacher explained the idea of the model was to provide personalized math problems to accelerate students’ learning,” she says. “That was really fun for me to see something with hands-on results. In today’s technological landscape, ChatGPT is utilized all the time, but how can you create your own version of that specifically for students? I love doing meaningful work like that.”

Though she has little time outside of sports and academics, she enjoys water coloring and cooking—a testament to her creative and domestic sides. “If I had 30 more hours, I’d dedicate that time to artwork,” she muses, highlighting a softer dimension to her ambitious persona that she traces back to the artistic skills of her mother. Her culinary skills have become legendary among teammates, especially her mastery of cooking steak, which was perfected during her stint on a carnivore diet.

Galvin dreams of a future playing professional soccer, ideally in the U.S. and close to her family. But her aspirations don’t end on the field, as she can see herself applying her UVA degree in a challenging business environment, potentially in private equity or wealth management. Yet, in the long run, her dreams are also deeply rooted in personal fulfillment. “I would love to start a family,” she shares, a charming reminder of her down-to-earth nature that persists to guide her as she strives to achieve her grand ambitions.
