Samy Ahmed, a current student ambassador in the M.S. in Global Commerce program, is excited about his job offer to work with Lenovo, a Fortune 500 global company with “a diverse group of forward thinkers and innovators in more than 160 countries.” Samy will join their Global Future Leaders cohort, a 5-year rotational program, dividing his time between Raleigh, North Carolina (USA) and Beijing (China).
Samy was a world traveler before he joined the M.S. in Global Commerce program. He names two hometowns—Milan, Italy, and Alexandria, Egypt—and speaks four languages. Samy holds a degree in economics and management for art, culture, and communication from Bocconi University and a graduate certificate in diplomacy, defense and development from American University.
When asked why he chose the M.S. in Global Commerce as his next step, Samy responded, “It’s hard to name another program that can offer students such an invaluable experience. In a world that is profoundly interconnected and desperately in need of international managers, this program gives powerful analytical tools to prepare students to become effective professionals and global leaders.”
Samy knew he wanted to work abroad and for a global company. He was able to utilize Commerce Career Services (CCS) to gain powerful insights regarding not only the company, but also the industry and even the specific job position. “I spent a lot of invaluable time with CCS. Career advisors and faculty members supported me every step of the way, from tailoring a perfect resume and cover letter to practicing business case interviews up to three times per week. For me, it was essential connecting with McIntire alumni and participating in career-focused events such as the Consulting Symposium in the fall term. I really never felt alone in my journey to finding the perfect Job!”
His cohort is now studying at Lingnan (University) College in Guangzhou, China. “China is just WOW. The Shenzhen Business Trip really opened up our eyes to the mix between cutting-edge technological advancement and Chinese cultural values that make the Pearl River Delta as mind-blowing as Silicon Valley. The time spent in China so far has definitely been a cultural experience that has changed my perspective about doing business in a global setting. I’m also very excited to take part in the Chinese New Year celebrations and will be exploring other cities in China with my classmates.”
After nine weeks in China, the M.S. in Global Commerce class will conclude their one-year program at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain. “My mother wanted me to be a diplomat, then a doctor, and finally a journalist,” Samy reflected. “I instead became a doer, a problem-solver, and a people person. I’m so excited to see where this incredible next adventure will take me. Forever, GO HOOS!”
