The University of Virginia’s McIntire School of Commerce ranked as the #1 public undergraduate business school in the United States and #2 overall in the annual rankings by business education website Poets&Quants for Undergrads. The program also garnered the nation’s top academic experience ranking.
The wide-ranging 2026 ranking rigorously evaluates programs across three equally weighted categories: academic experience, admissions standards, and career outcomes. McIntire yielded exceptional results across all three, with particularly strong gains in academic experience and admissions.
“Being ranked #2 nationally and recognized as the top U.S. public undergraduate business program is deeply gratifying,” says Interim Dean Amanda Cowen. “We are especially proud of our #1 ranking in academic experience—a holistic assessment that considers everything from teaching quality and faculty accessibility to experiential learning, mentorship, and alumni engagement. These are the hallmarks of a McIntire education, and they reflect the exceptional students, faculty, staff, and alumni who make this community what it is. Delivering an outstanding academic experience is what we work every day to achieve.”
At the center of McIntire’s prowess is its consistently outstanding academic experience, with the School being recognized as the best such program in the United States in 2026. This year marks a return to the #1 spot after ranking third in 2025 and continues a perennial pattern of excellence that includes ranking first in 2024 and second in 2023. Based entirely on alumni survey responses, McIntire earned the top score of 100 in the category, reinforcing its reputation for delivering a rigorous and highly engaging student experience.
The Poets&Quants alumni survey offers a detailed view into how recent McIntire graduates evaluate their business education. Alumni from the Class of 2023 were asked to assess a wide range of factors, including the quality of teaching, faculty accessibility, career advising, and the strength of the alumni network. Additional questions explored how well the program prepared them for the workforce; the value of their investment of time and tuition; the availability of experiential learning opportunities such as consulting projects and global immersions, mentorship, and access to practicing professionals; and satisfaction with career outcomes, including first job placement and salary. Respondents were asked to reflect on signature experiences that shaped their education, as well as the effectiveness of advising and wellness support services. Three years’ worth of alumni data is considered for this category.
McIntire’s strong performance indicates that it performs exceptionally well across this broad range of experiential measures.
Another major factor behind McIntire’s high ranking is its performance in admissions. The School ranked #2 overall in this category, earning a score of 98.38 out of 100, based on metrics such as a rigorous 5.5% acceptance rate (combining both admission to UVA and then to McIntire) and a 92% yield on offers of admission; the increase reflects both heightened demand and the strength of the applicant pool.
These gains coincide with one of the most significant changes in the School’s history: the introduction of a redesigned three-year undergraduate program that kicked off in fall 2025. In the new model, students enter the Commerce School at the start of their second year at UVA, giving them more time to build foundational skills and chart their professional paths. McIntire’s signature integrated core continues to anchor the curriculum for third-year students.
“McIntire’s highly integrated curriculum is intentionally designed to reflect the complexity of business and the intricacies that organizations face every day,” says Professor Roger Martin, Director of the Undergraduate Program. “Students learn how to connect ideas across disciplines, apply them in practical settings, and communicate their insights effectively. The three-year structure gives us the ability to best develop these capabilities in a more intentional and sustained way.”
The redesigned curriculum, which builds on a broad liberal arts foundation, emphasizes communication, teamwork, and leadership in addition to technical skills, and is supported by deep faculty engagement, extensive alumni and industry interaction, and a portfolio of global learning opportunities.
McIntire’s position in the 2026 rankings reflects both its longstanding strengths and its commitment to continuous improvement. With top marks in academic experience, a strengthened admissions profile, and a forward-looking curriculum, the School continues to set a high standard in undergraduate business education.
