Fourth-year student Diya Gupta has been awarded the prestigious Lenox-Conyngham Scholarship, earning the opportunity to pursue graduate study at the University of Cambridge this fall. The double-major in Commerce and Global Studies Environments & Sustainability has distinguished herself at UVA through academic excellence, collaborative leadership, and a sustained commitment to global and community-centered impact.

A Jefferson and Echols Scholar, Diya built an academic path that reflects both intellectual curiosity and purpose. At McIntire, she concentrated in Management, with a track in Global Commerce and Society, pairing business strategy with an interest in how organizations operate across cultural and environmental contexts.

Reflecting on her academic journey, she says she was drawn to a “broader, global, and tangible connection” between disciplines, ultimately finding that balance through sustainability and commerce. That combination allowed her to find common ground among “issues and the global applicability of sustainable practices” with the strategic thinking she developed at McIntire.

Her interest in Cambridge, and in the Lenox-Conyngham Scholarship specifically, grew out of that interdisciplinary approach. Diya notes that she entered McIntire with an open mind, knowing she wanted to explore how business could be applied to other disciplines. The scholarship stood out as a unique opportunity to have this exchange and to be part of a small, enduring community of scholars. She will pursue a Master of Philosophy in Development Studies at Trinity College, where her proposed research examines how climate-induced migration shapes development outcomes in South Asia.

On Grounds, Diya has taken on a wide range of leadership roles that reflect both initiative and a commitment to collaboration. She serves as Co-President of the Asian Student Network at McIntire, where she has helped guide the organization’s growth and expand its impact through partnerships with other affinity groups. “Our stronger emphasis has been on collaborating with other affinity groups to make the most profound impact,” she says. Under her leadership, ASN has bolstered its presence within the Commerce School and fostered a more interconnected student community.

Her leadership also includes participation in advancing other UVA initiatives: As a fellow with the Meriwether Lewis Institute for Citizen Leadership, Diya has worked alongside students, faculty, and administrators to address complex challenges facing the University. She has also contributed to beneficial environmental efforts through her work with UVA’s Office for Sustainability, where she developed outreach materials and helped drive engagement. In that role, she focused on making sustainability more accessible and actionable for students and staff alike.

Diya’s commitment to service and community engagement is equally evident in her work outside of sustainability. As a program director with Madison House’s CASH program, she has helped provide free tax services to lower-income community members, while also training and leading volunteers. She has served as a University Guide, an Echols Scholar ambassador, and a mentor to both peers and prospective students, roles that reflect her ability to connect with others and contribute meaningfully across a wide range of settings.

Commerce Professor Mark White, who taught Diya in two courses, reflected on her many contributions. He emphasized her academic standing and character, emphatically stating that he would place her “in the top 2% of all the students” he has had in his classes over his decades at UVA. White says she has distinguished herself both academically and “as a generous, giving, and effective contributor” to the community. Highlighting her work with the University’s sustainability initiatives, including her involvement with the Meriwether Lewis Institute, Morven Farm, and the Office for Sustainability, he says that she leads “with grace, humility, and conviction” and is “intellectually gifted, wholeheartedly engaged in the community, and motivated to make a positive difference in the world around her.”

Diya’s record of achievement also includes some of UVA’s highest honors, including election to the Raven Society and the IMP Society, as well as selection for Lawn residency. She has received multiple research awards through the UVA Center for Global Health Equity and has presented her work at major conferences, further demonstrating her ability to bridge academic inquiry with real-world application.

As she looks ahead to Cambridge, Diya is focused not only on her research but also on the experience of learning in a new environment. “I’m excited to live somewhere new,” she says, reflecting on how her move from California to Charlottesville shaped her undergraduate experience and how this next step will provide another essential perspective. At Trinity, she hopes to embrace the new academic culture and build meaningful relationships, while continuing to explore the global connections that have defined her time at UVA. “I’m looking forward to challenging myself again academically and being a part of the culture at Cambridge,” she says.

Receiving the Lenox-Conyngham Scholarship represents a culmination of Diya’s work at UVA and a starting point for a future based in collaboration, driven by curiosity, and guided by a dedication to create positive impact on the global stage.
