It is with tremendous sorrow that I write to let you know that Drew Sanderford, esteemed Director for the Center for Real Estate and the Built Environment, Robert M. White Professor in Real Estate Finance, and two-time UVA alumnus, passed away Aug. 31, 2023.
Drew joined the McIntire School of Commerce in 2020 as the inaugural Robert M. White Professor in Real Estate Finance, bringing with him an exceptional record of research and a transformative vision for the role of real estate. Under his stewardship, we launched the UVA Center for Real Estate and the Built Environment in 2022. Drew’s unparalleled leadership transformed the Center into a vibrant interdisciplinary hub, successfully convening alumni, students, and industry leaders through various initiatives, most notably an acclaimed professional conference.
Beyond his professional acumen, Drew’s qualities of wit, wisdom, and an unwavering generosity of spirit were foundational to the expansion and success of McIntire’s burgeoning real estate programs. His innovative thinking, compassionate leadership, and substantial contributions to our academic community will remain etched in our collective memory. Equally impactful was Drew’s dedication to his students. He not only taught in the Real Estate Track at McIntire but was also pivotal in the creation and rollout of McIntire’s Real Estate Minor in 2021. Drew was passionate about developing world-class educational experiences, often leading students on educational treks both within the United States and abroad.
Drew will be dearly missed by the McIntire and UVA communities. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and the rest of his family and friends.
In this sorrowful period, may we all find the grace to be compassionate to ourselves and others, reflecting on Drew’s invaluable contributions to our lives and community.
